Tile Styles

There are basically three types of tile to choose from: glazed ceramic, unglazed ceramic and porcelain. Understanding each them will help you make a decision that works best for you.

Glazed Ceramic Tile

Glazed ceramic tiles are covered with a variety of ceramic stains and glass coating minerals. Finishes typically are available in a matte, semi-gloss or high-gloss. Glazed ceramic tiles provide superior stain and moisture resistance than unglazed tile.

When making a decision on what finish to choose, consider the following: high gloss finishes are typically slipperier and scratches tend to be more visible, while textured matte finishes provide more traction and scratches then to be less visible.

Unglazed Ceramic Tile

Unglazed ceramic tiles are very hard and dense and are typically installed outside your home. Unglazed ceramic tile do not offer much protection against stains compared to glazed ceramic and porcelain tile. However, unglazed tiles are more slip resistance.

Please note that it is recommended to apply sealing to help prevent staining.

Porcelain Tile

Porcelain tiles usually come under the ceramic tile category. One of the big distinctions made in choosing Porcelain tile versus other tile categories is the fact that Porcelain tiles are the hardest and densest tiles available. Other distinctions made when choosing Porcelain tile the following: the color in porcelain tile permeates all the way through the tile, making them non-porous, resistive to scratching and able to withstand extreme temperatures.
